This secluded bay known as ix-Xatt l-Aħmar, meaning Red Beach, due to the reddish brown colour of the soil of the terraced fields falling towards the bay, is an idyllic spot both for swimming and diving.
The site is especially favoured amongst experienced divers as it hosts three deep wrecks, MV Cominoland, MV Karwela and MV Xlendi, a wall reef with some caves, and a shallow bay. Karwela and Cominoland wrecks were scuttled together in 2006 whilst Xlendi wreck was scuttled 1999.
Although lying just one bay along from Mġarr Harbour and within site of the Guardiola (guard post) of Fort Chambrai, ix-Xatt l-Aħmar is one of Gozo’s less discovered swimming areas, frequented by locals and known for the crystal clear waters and beautiful coastal surroundings.
