This manmade cave in an upper cliff on Ras il-Wardija in the limits of San Lawrenz, further south from Dwejra Bay, is thought to have been created in Phoenician times and used as a religious sanctuary. It is a monument consecrated to the nymphs, especially those presiding over springs, hence why it is referred to as the nymphaeum. Many believe that the attribution to the nymphs is improbable but the cave’s position is truly striking. This historical site is situated on private land therefore cannot be accessed by the public without contacting the owners prior to visiting.
