Mġarr ix-Xini is a secluded inlet flanked by steep rocks at the end of which is a tiny shingle beach leading into the sea. The clear waters and caves in the cliffs make it perfect for swimming and diving. It especially attracts divers due to the presence of the remains of the former Gozo ferry MV Xlendi which was deliberately sunken there in 1999 to create an artificial reef and dive site.
During the rule of the Order of St. John it appears that Mġarr ix-Xini served as a small harbour for its galleys. On the other hand the Ottomans used it to captivate the Gozo folk into their ships in their terrible invasion on the island in 1551.
In 1661 a Watchtower of the Order was built above the entrance to the cove. It is the largest coastal tower constructed on the island of Gozo and is still standing today. The footpath leading to the tower from the bay was restored and reopened, enabling visitors to enjoy the delightful walk to the tower.
In 2015 the picturesque bay was featured in the movie ‘By the Sea’, starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.
